Africa had over 10,000 different independent states with distinct cultures and traditions before it was colonized by European powers in the late 1800’s. Only Ethiopia and Liberia were not colonized.
Africa is home to over 3000 ethnic groups speaking over 2000 languages which represents about 25 percent of all languages on earth..
Africa is the second largest continent in the world with an area of over 30 million square kilometers and is also the second most populous continent with over 1.1 billion people which accounts for about 16% of the world’s population. It is second only to Asia in both size and population.
Africa is the hottest continent in the world with large deserts and drylands notable among which are the Sahara desert, Kalahari desert and Namib desert. Deserts and drylands account for 60 percent of Africa’s land mass with the Sahara desert been the largest in the world.
Africa is home to the majority of the world’s remaining natural resources which is estimated at about 30 percent of the World’s total. The dark continent has vast reserves of crude oil, gold, diamonds, cobalt, uranium, etc.
Africa has the largest populations of wild animals worldwide with thousands of lions, elephants, rhinoceros, tiger, leopard and so many others. Some animals such as giraffe, zebra, gorilla, hippopotamus, chimpanzee and wildebeest are only found in Africa. Also, the largest number of freshwater fish species is found in Lake Malawi.
Africa is home to the Nile River which is the longest river in the world spanning 6,650 kilometers.
Africa has the record for the world’s largest wildlife migration which took place at The Serengeti in Tanzania with more than 750,000 zebra marching in front of about 1.2 million wildebeest as they crossed the area.
